Literacy: A simplified approach to Letters and Sounds

(3 hours)

Supporting childrens literacy in the early years is a complex job and at OMC we have devised a simple approach to understanding and developing pre-reading and pre-writing skills.  We have adapted the National Strategies Programme Letters and Sounds Phase One and simplified the concepts to a single thread of learning.  We have found that this simplified version clarifies the practitioner role in supporting childrens early literacy skills and enables the practitioner to identify development and plan clear, effective and ongoing opportunities to extend the childs learning.  This will support both your practitioners confidence and their ability to extend and enhance your settings provision of literacy opportunities.

Mathematics: Understanding how mathematical understanding develops

Mathematics is an ongoing area of concern for many professionals within the Early Years sector and at OMC we feel the development of basic mathematical concepts are often over complicated and misunderstood.  We have developed a simplified system for both Numbers and Shapes, Space and Measure to show how these concepts develop from first principles to complex, interrelated skills. During this session we will walk through each step in a childs journey towards developing mathematical awareness and discuss how mathematical development can be supported through daily routines and everyday activities. Each practitioner in attendance will be supported to understand and develop an individualised plan of opportunities for a child and then an understanding of how to use these skills to support all children in their care.
